We must note the most striking features is much tighter regulation, than in Germany.
- no batteries. Batteries were not part of the safety review and didn’t make it into the legalization scheme. It is hoped these will come later.
- only kits can be sold legally in Britain today, to plug-in without an electrician’s approval. So if you make your own kit or use used solar panels you are outside the scope of what’s permitted.
- there is nothing in the legislation ensuring that tenants have a right to install it.
- Limits on the wooden things you can put panels on: You can put plug-in solar on some wooden structures, just not walls/fences/cladding/“enclosures. But a deck isn’t one of the prohibited locations.
It seems renters can construct a right out of the
„The Renters‘ Rights Act 2025 changed the game for tenants who want to improve their homes. Under the Act, landlords cannot „unreasonably refuse“ tenant requests for improvements to the property. List of approved packages
Payback time on the current kits – all going for £700+ – is currently about 6-8 years. Plug in solar in other countries, e.g. Germany, is often about half that cost. It's an expensive start but almost certainly due to the limited options available so far

If you're looking at buying I'd give it another week or two. Expect there'll be a rush next week, bringing down prices. Currently there is a VERY high premium on kits vs getting your own panels and micro inverter, though the latter would not be compliant as a whole (even if the individual bits were)
